Lynda B. Lemieux, D.V.M.

Lynda Beattie Lemieux grew up in Manchester, Vermont one of five children. She and her family were involved in raising, training, and showing Morgan horses. Lyn decided she wanted to become a veterinarian when she was eleven years old. At that time her first Morgan, Mia, was a yearling and developed a severe case of pneumonia. Her veterinarian, Dr. LaGrange knew this was serious and told Lyn it was a life threatening infection. He started the young horse on intravenous support and antibiotics. Lyn basically lived in the barn for the next several days. Mia gained strength and to everyone's surprise made a full recovery. Dr. LaGrange was a true gentleman and he made sure to tell Lyn that it was "lots of love" that made the difference. Lyn was aware of her contribution but she knew that Dr. LaGrange had saved Mia. She also knew that she wanted to become a veterinarian. Over the years Lyn has won many equestrian events but the most memorable will always be the Saddle Seat Equitation Championship at the National Morgan Horse Show. The horse she rode to the championship was Mia.

Lyn attended the University of Vermont where she met and married Gerry Lemieux. Together they worked at the UVM Morgan Horse Farm training and showing horses. Lyn graduated at the top of her class, summa cum laude, as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the John Dewey Society with a BS in Animal Science. At the time of her application to Cornell, women veterinarians were very rare. Each year Cornell accepted 60 students, of which two were women. These two women were traditionally New York State residents. In the twenty-five years preceding 1974 only two non-resident women had been accepted. Lyn was a Vermonter and the odds were not good. To further complicate matter's Lyn's husband was also applying to Cornell. He too was a Vermonter and admission for a non-resident male was also a long shot. Lyn was granted an interview. Her flawless academic record and animal oriented background clearly impressed the admissions committee. She was accepted and so was her husband. At the time of their admission they were introduced to the class of 1974 as the first married couple to be accepted in the history of Cornell's Veterinary College.

Dr. Lyn Lemieux obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University in 1974 and was named to Phi Zeta, a national honorary society. She has been an associate veterinarian at Berkshire Veterinary Hospital since 1975. Her professional interests include feline medicine and internal medicine.

Drs. Lyn and Gerry have three children (Jeremy, Jason, and Julia), five Morgan horses (Maestro, Courante, Lyric, Aria, and Hope), a Brittany Spaniel (Joy), a Shih Tzu (Kimmi), and a cat (Chip). Lyn enjoys biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, windsurfing and riding and driving the horses.
